Building with AI

How Much Does It Cost to Build an App With AI in 2026?

What it costs to build and launch an app with AI in 2026: 3 example budgets, from free to the App Store, with tool prices and the running costs nobody mentions.

8 min readBy Nina Kolari

The cheapest app is the one you build after checking people want it. The second cheapest is the one where you pay for nothing until you need it.

You don’t need a $30,000 developer quote. My pick for a beginner: start on Lovable’s free plan, and pay $25 a month the day you want your own domain.

Here’s the full picture: 3 example budgets, what each tool costs, and the running costs no one mentions until the bill arrives. If you’d rather build it with guidance, here’s where I teach this.

What does each AI app builder cost?

Every builder has a free plan. The paid plans start around $18 to $25 a month.

Tool Best for Starting price Free plan Key strength
Lovable Complete beginners building a web app $25 a month, or $21 a month billed yearly 5 credits a day, up to 30 a month Everything built in, from database to publishing
Replit Beginners building a native iPhone app $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly Daily credits, 1 published app for 30 days Sends iPhone apps to TestFlight and the App Store
Bolt iPhone and Android from one build $18 a month billed yearly ($216 a year) 1M tokens a month, Bolt branding Custom domain included on Pro
Claude Code Founders ready for more control Included in Claude Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly None, Claude Free excludes it Works on any code, anywhere
Cursor Founders building for the App Store Free plan; paid plans changed in 2026 Limited requests Serious building and iPhone apps

Prices checked on each company’s pricing page on 24 October 2026, before tax.

What should you look for in an AI app builder’s price?

Look past the monthly number. Four things decide what you pay:

  • Credits. Most builders charge in credits or tokens. When they run out, you wait or top up.
  • The custom domain. Lovable needs a paid plan for your own domain. Bolt includes one on Pro.
  • Mobile. Lovable builds web apps only. Replit and Bolt build native phone apps.
  • Billing period. Yearly billing saves 10 to 16% on Lovable, Replit and Claude, but you pay up front.

How much does each tool cost, and what do you get?

Lovable

Lovable is where I’d start any complete beginner. It has everything built in, so you don’t think about security or databases at all. The startup cost to have your app and business live is stupidly low. Its weakness: it builds web apps, not native phone apps.

Best for: your first web app, with no code editor in sight. Pricing: Free, then Pro at $25 a month or $250 a year. Higher credit tiers cost more. Free plan: 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month, with the Lovable badge and no custom domain. Bottom line: the cheapest real start for a web app. For a real example, my full SaaS app took 357 build credits.

Replit

Replit builds native iPhone apps with Expo and sends them to TestFlight and the App Store. Its weakness: it doesn’t publish to Google Play yet, and the free plan’s published app goes offline after 30 days.

Best for: a first iPhone app without a code editor. Pricing: Core at $20 a month, or $18 a month billed yearly, with $20 of usage credits included. Pro is $100 a month. Free plan: daily credits up to a monthly cap, one published app for 30 days. Bottom line: the simplest paid route to the App Store.

Bolt

Bolt builds iPhone and Android apps from one codebase through Expo. Its weakness: for the stores, you run the build on your own computer, with Node.js and Git installed.

Best for: founders who want both stores from one build. Pricing: Pro at $18 a month billed yearly, $216 a year, custom domain included. Free plan: 1M tokens a month with a 300K daily limit, Bolt branding, no custom domain. Bottom line: good value, with more setup for mobile.

Claude Code and Cursor

Claude Code and Cursor are coding tools, not builders. You get full control over the code, and you set up hosting, databases and app builds yourself. Their weakness for a beginner: more decisions on day one.

Best for: founders ready for more control, and apps going to the App Store. Pricing: Claude Pro includes Claude Code at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Cursor has a free plan, and its paid plans changed in 2026, so check its pricing page. Free plan: none for Claude Code. Limited requests on Cursor. Bottom line: the next step after your first builder, not the first one.

What does an app cost in a real budget?

Here are 3 example budgets, calculated from the prices above. They leave out tax, domain fees and credit top-ups.

Budget What you get Per month First year
1. Free start Lovable Free or Bolt Free, plus Supabase Free $0 $0
2. Web app on your own domain Lovable Pro, or Bolt Pro billed yearly $25 (Lovable) or $18 (Bolt) $250 (Lovable yearly) or $216 (Bolt)
3. iPhone app in the App Store Replit Core or Bolt Pro billed yearly, plus Apple about $26 $315

Budget 1 is for a prototype you show 5 people. Budget 2 is a launched web app. Budget 3 is a launched iPhone app. On Replit’s monthly billing, budget 3 is $339 in the first year. Add $25 once for Google Play if you want Android too.

What running costs show up after the build?

These costs start once real people use your app. Most have a free tier, so you pay only when you outgrow it.

Cost Example Free tier Paid from
Database Supabase 500 MB, 2 projects, paused after 1 week without activity $25 a month
Hosting Vercel Hobby, for personal non-commercial use only $20 a month per seat
Mobile builds Expo EAS A limited number of iPhone and Android builds $19 a month, plus usage
AI features Anthropic API None Sonnet 5.5 at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens
Payments Stripe No monthly fee A fee per payment, set by country

Two traps to know. Supabase’s free plan pauses your project after a week with no activity, which is fine for a prototype and bad for a launched app. And Vercel’s free plan is for non-commercial use, so a business app needs Pro.

How did I compare these?

I compared the plans a beginner meets first: the free plan and the cheapest paid plan of each tool. Lovable and Cursor are tools I build with myself. The other prices come from each company’s own pricing page and docs. Prices checked on 24 October 2026.

I left out prices I couldn’t confirm on the official page. Cursor’s new plans, Bolt’s monthly price and Stripe’s fees are the ones to check yourself.

Which budget should you choose?

Pay for the next step, not the whole journey.

  • Still testing the idea? Budget 1. Stay free until people use it. Validate first.
  • Launching a web app? Budget 2. Upgrade the day you want your own domain.
  • The app needs the phone? Budget 3. Pay Apple only when you’re ready for TestFlight.

My pick: start on Lovable’s free plan for any web app. Pay the $25 when you connect your domain. For an iPhone app, budget for $315 in year one, and stay free on everything else until you have users.

The cost table above shows the price, not the path. How to build an app as a non-technical founder walks through all 9 steps, and what to put in your first version keeps the build small. For timelines, see how long it takes to build an app. For more tools, read my tools guide. And if you want ideas, here are 5 apps to build instead of paying for subscriptions.

Plan your app budget

Help me plan what my app will cost for the first 12 months.

My app: [one sentence]
Web app or iPhone app: [choose]
The tools I plan to use, with their prices: [paste from the guide]
Users I expect in the first 3 months: [number]

Build a table: month 1, months 2 to 3, months 4 to 12, and the year-one total. Use only the prices I gave you. Mark every line as required or optional, and say when each optional line becomes necessary. If a price is missing, leave the cell empty and tell me what to check.

Find costs to delay

Review my planned tool costs and tell me which ones wait until I have real users.

My plan: [paste your list of tools and plans]
Where I am now: [idea / prototype / first version / launched]

For each paid item, tell me: keep paying now, downgrade, or wait. Give one reason each. Don't recommend a tool I didn't list. If you're unsure what a plan includes, say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to build an app with AI for free?

Yes, for a prototype. Lovable, Bolt and Replit all have free plans, and Supabase has a free database. Free plans come with limits: credit caps, the builder's branding, no custom domain, and on Replit your one free published app goes offline after 30 days.

What is the cheapest way to put an iPhone app in the App Store?

About $315 in the first year. Replit Core or Bolt Pro on yearly billing is $216, and Apple's Developer Program is $99 a year. Tax, credit top-ups and any database upgrade come on top.

Do I pay Apple every year?

Yes. The Apple Developer Program costs $99 per membership year, and you need it for App Store distribution and TestFlight. Google Play is different: a one-time $25 fee.

What does it cost if my app uses AI features?

You pay the AI provider per use. Anthropic's API, for example, charges per million tokens: $2 for input and $10 for output on Sonnet 5.5, and $0.10 and $0.50 on Haiku 5.5. A small app with a few users costs little, and the bill grows with use.

Which costs are one-off and which repeat?

Google Play's $25 is one-off. Apple's $99 repeats every year. Builder plans, databases, hosting and build services are monthly or yearly. Payment fees come out of each sale.
