Not sure what’s crazier: that I started learning iOS at 50… or that I only started because AI told me to.
And since people keep asking how you actually change careers later in life without losing your mind, here’s what worked for me…
HOW TO CHANGE CAREERS AT 50 (OR ANY AGE)
1. Stop waiting for clarity. It won’t come. Pick something that feels “interesting enough” and start.
2. Give yourself a deadline, not a life commitment. Mine was: “Stick with iOS until January. Then decide.”
3. Treat the first 30 days like testing a new hobby, not reinventing your career and identity. Have fun, play with the possibility.
4. Lower the bar. The goal is showing up, not being good.
5. Use AI as your unfair advantage. Let it shortcut the boring parts and keep you moving. And your teacher!
6. Build tiny wins early so your brain stops panicking.
7. Ignore the naysayers.. They may come strong but just ignore them until your deadline.
8. Document what you’re learning and your journey. Doesn’t matter where. It keeps you accountable.
9. Don’t quit on a bad day. Expect to hate it some days. That’s normal.
10. Around month 2-3, few things start clicking. Momentum > motivation here.
11. Follow what feels surprisingly easy or fun - that’s usually the new direction forming.
12. Don’t announce the career change too early. Protect the messy middle. And enjoy learning something new without pressure.
13. Build something, publish something, put what ever you are learning somewhere public for others to learn too (I’m also teaching vibe coding).
14. Let results convince you, not vibes. You’ll know when it’s becoming “your thing.”
15. When an unexpected opportunity shows up (mine was a hackathon win + getting featured), say yes even if you feel underqualified.
16. At some point, the new path stops feeling like an experiment and starts feeling obvious. That’s the moment you’ve changed careers.
17. Start saying yes to random things… I joined hackathon because “oh, that’ll be fun”, little did I know what was to come…
18. Stop waiting for motivation. It comes from taking action, not motivation brings action.
TL;DR:
Start small → stay consistent → follow momentum → ignore naysayers → let AI speed up the boring bits → give it time.
Career change isn’t a leap. It’s a slow drift that suddenly becomes your new normal
